Analysis of music videos LO1

Vampire Weekend- Holiday
Audience
The purpose of this video is to entertain and promote the artist. Also it allows the audience to see the band. Another purpose is that is shows what the band wanted to convey in the song and what it’s about. The video is entertaining because it is funny seeing the band in silly costumes on holiday.
Form
The form is a music video because the audio is anchored to the visuals- Andrew Goodwin (1992)
Content and Meaning
All of the locations are a holiday theme. I can tell because it denotes beaches, sunshine and pools. This connotes fun and relaxation. This is iconography of having money to go to all the amazing places. In the video the band are in Victorian costumes and wigs. This costume choice juxtaposes with the holiday because it’s a modern holiday. Laura Mulvey in 1975 spoke about male gaze. This applies to the section when there are girls in bikinis. They are in the music video to look good and attract male attention it is clear that men are dominant in this music video. This is because it denotes the men looking at the women and almost showing them off. This connotes that males are dominant.
There are a few props like an old fashioned telephone. This fits into the theme of the Victorian era. It connotes wealth because in Victorian times possessions were important to status. All of the other props are from the Victorian era. This connotes that they have out dated views. They are mocking the Victorian’s views and what their idea of fun was at the time. Also there are some guitars in the music video. This is because they want to show the band members playing.
The lighting is high key and all natural. This connotes a happy vibe and theme in the music video. There is a gesture of fists in the air. This connotes aggression and violence. Also when they are playing the guitar it is iconography of an indie band. In the video the colours are very vibrant this makes the video look light hearted to the audience. The bright colours such as the pool. The costumes connote fun and a light-hearted atmosphere. The video starts with them clinking glasses. This connotes the start of the song. There isn’t really a structure to the video but the camera does keep on going back on the lead singer. This is iconography of indie music videos. The song ends with them walking off to the sunset. This connotes the end of the song. This is very common in indie music videos because it’s a clear sign of the end. The music video is a performance.
The audience will have preferred reading because the director wanted the audience to see people having fun and for the audience to want to have the same fun on their holidays.
One of the first shots is a close up of the lead singer singing the song. This just shows the audience who the lead singer is. This is very important in music videos because the lead singer is always seen as the most important. There is a deep depth of field. This connotes to the audience what environment they are in. This is because it shows the whole background they are in. There is a tracking shot that follows the whole band cross the road. This makes the audience feel like they are with them. There is a low angle where you can just see the silhouette of the band. This connotes power and strength to the audience. There is a wipe it denotes them sat down, then running this is used to connotes a new location. Slow motion is used when they are running to connote they are having fun. Also it can show a good memory.
Genre and Intended audience
The genre of the music video is indie. This is because of the oddness in it. Also the fast beat, which makes it slightly pop like. The vibrant colours make it that genre as well.
Intended audience would be quite a wide range because a lot of people listen to indie music. So the age range would be 14-23 years old. The subculture of people, who like this song, will be trendy hipsters. They have a stylish lifestyle. They wear vintage clothes.
This video is non-diegetic because the sound plays over the video.

Patent Pending- Douchebag
Audience
The purpose is to entertain and promote the band. This video is entertaining because they are doing a parody of a  “douchbag” and this is the topic they are singing about.
Form
The form is a music video because the audio is anchored to the visuals- Andrew Goodwin (1992)

Content and Meaning
The location is a fake award show, because it denotes awards, a crowd and a podium. This is iconography because people want to win awards. Also award shows are places where celebrities go to and most people want to be famous so this is important. The stereotype of the douchebag is what the whole video is based around. They are making fun of that certain type of character. This is shown by the over the top look of the superficial characters in the award scenes. So it’s irony in the iconography. The costumes denote fake tan, big jewellery and aviator sunglasses. This connotes the superficial stereotype. Also there are suits to make it look formal and like a proper award show. There is a constant prop of the classic “red solo cup”. This connotes alcohol, drinking and party’s which is where you would find the stereotype of the superficial people. So the red solo cup is a massive stereotype. There are gestures of showing muscles, which connote the stereotype of a douchebag and a stereotype of male dominance. There is another gesture of them playing their instruments this connotes the band showing that they are natural and don’t use auto tune. The lighting is low key because it’s an award show and that is the lighting they have at real award shows. This connotes the black humour. The narrative is the award show throughout. This includes people winning awards this increases the comedy because the audience know it is fake and a stereotype. The start is the lead singer introducing the “show” and it finishes with him talking about the end of the night. This is similar to a performance music video with it starting and ending with the lead singer. Also there are parts of the band performing. The camera fluctuates between the guys playing the instruments and the lead singer. The preferred reading is the fact the directors dressed up the band members up in fake tan, big jewellery and tank tops. The audience knows this is a douchebag stereotype. Also another preferred reading is the audience seeing the band play. The audience knows this is sterotypical of a rock band. The first shot is of the lead singer in a close up, this is to show the audience who the lead singer is. There is a wide shot of the whole band. This is stereotypical of a pop punk band. So the audience would’ve known what music to expect from seeing this. There is some quick tilt movements from down to up of the band members. This is used to introduce the band members to the audience. Also there are close ups of the band members playing their instruments. This is to show their talent to the audience. There are title graphics that denote “The Douche Awards”. This connotes the theme of the music video, which is satirical of pop culture and what being cool is. There is a split screen that denotes the different contestants for the awards. This connotes who is going to win. This editing technique enables the audience to see all of their reactions.
Genre and Intended audience
The genre of Patent Pending is punk rock. The clips of them performing which happens quite a lot in rock videos show this. Also the light-hearted parody puts the punk aspect in. Intended audience is from 16-24 year olds that would be classes as rockers that have a punk lifestyle. They have a dark coloured dress sense and sometimes bright coloured hair. This video is non-diegetic because the sound plays over the video.

Twenty One Pilots- Holding On To You
Audience
The purpose of this music video is to entertain and to promote the artist. Also it gives some insight into what the song is about. Also it shows the audience how the band performs and their style. Another purpose is the band trying t connect with the audience and helping them through their personal struggles. Also the band sends out the positive message that things will get better. They try to connect with the audience on an emotional level.
Form
The form is a music video because the audio is anchored to the visuals- Andrew Goodwin (1992)
Content and Meaning
The location denotes a large dark room. This connotes that the song is about a hard-hitting subject. So to have a glamorous location wouldn’t be appropriate. Also it’s the opposite of iconography because being in and large dark room wouldn’t be enjoyable. The costumes for the band are suits. This connotes a professional look. But they are not normal suits so this could connote that not everything is perfect. Then the dancers have black leotards. This connotes beauty because ballet dancers wear them and they are elegant. But this juxtaposes with the make up they have. The make up is a skull face. The skull faces connotes death because the song is about death. Also it connotes that even though things look beautiful at first they all have dark sides. The props denote a piano and drums. This connotes the genre of the video. Also there is a prop of a rope noose where it is around the singer’s neck. The ‘dead dancers’ are pulling him down. This is a metaphor for him facing his fears and encourages the audience to face their fears. It connotes that the audience are strong enough to fight their demons. The dancers are male and female. This connotes that when you’re dead gender doesn’t matter. The lead singer makes gestures with his hands towards the camera. This connotes that h is speaking to the audience. Another gesture is the singer dancing along with the dancers but not as professional as them. This connotes that he is relaxed and he’s letting go. Finally there is a gesture that denoted loads of hands moving around the lead singers head. This is used to connote death taking over his mind. All the lighting is low key because the song is on a depressing subject, so the lighting connotes this. There are a lot of shadows. They connote the demons in people’s minds. The song starts by denoting plastic bags being taken off the band. This connotes the start of the music video. In the middle eight a strobe light goes off this juxtaposes with the rest of the song. Then at the end the band stops playing and plastic covers go back on them. This connotes the end of the song. So the video does have a small narrative structure but it is mostly performance. There is a jump cut that denotes the signer from one angle, when he starts singing and then it shows a lower angle of him. This connotes his moods going up and down. Also it lets the audience see the lead singer from different angles. Special effects have been used. It denotes a strobe light and the skull makeup slowly appearing on his face. This connotes death taking over his mind.
Genre and Intended audience
The genre of this music video is a rap rock. This is because of the fast pace of the singing and the heaviness of the music. Also it’s also rap music that talks about personal problems and deep subjects. The intended audience in 15-20 year olds because the band are ideal partners so they will appeal to that age range. The subculture would be fashionable hipsters that also like rock. Also the type of people that would go to rock festivals like download. This video is non-diegetic because the sound plays over the video

Straight Lines- Half Gone
Audience
The purpose of this video is to entertain and promote the artist. Also it allows the audience to see the band perform. It shows more about what the song means. Also it shows the audience more of the message the band wanted to put across.
Form
The form is a music video because the audio is anchored to the visuals- Andrew Goodwin (1992)
Content and Meaning
The only location denotes a small black and white striped room. This connotes a sense of being trapped and enclosed. Also because that room is the only location. It connotes that a lot of different can get the feeling of entrapment. The have done this to try and connect with the audience. The costumes of the band members denote a lot of dark colours and have a vintage theme. This matches the design of the room. Also the costumes have been chosen to look like a stereotypical rock band because of preferred reading. The costumes connote normality because they look like they are in average clothes. Then there is a costume of a leotard for the ballerina. This is also preferred reading because the audience will expect a ballerina to wear a leotard. Then the little boy is wearing a blazer and a tie. This connotes that he goes to school. One of the props is when the little boy is holding a paper airplane. This connotes childhood because its usually children that make them. Then there is a prop of a lady holding a jar of candles. This could connote that she’s holding on to her life and how precious life is. Because it needs to be protected. One of the gestures denotes the band playing their instruments. This connotes that they are a real band and don’t use any auto tune. Another gesture when a stick is pointed at words on a board. This connotes that the words are important. Another gesture that is used with the stick is moves in a whipping motion this connotes aggression and violence. Throughout most of the music video artificial light is used. Except for one scene that has natural light streaming through the windows. It is when the ballerina is dancing. The natural light connotes that the dancing is not artificial and it’s pure. The reason that most of the music video is artificial light, is because it connotes a cramped atmosphere and makes then audience feel more enclosed whilst watching it. There is a lot of black in the video. This is a stereotypical colour of indie rock videos. Also there are no bright or vibrant colours because it wouldn’t be appropriate for the genre of the song. There is a shallow shot so just the lead singer is in focus and there are loads of candles in the background. This connotes that the lead singer is important, as he is the only thing in focus. There are jump cuts of the band playing the song from different angles. There narrative structure is mainly performance based because we don’t see any real stories from the characters.
Genre and Intended audience
The genre is indie rock because it has dark colours and is covering a deep subject. Also it has a lot of performance in it, which is stereotypical of a rock band. The intended audience would be 16-20 year olds because the band are ideal partners so they would appeal to that age range. The subgenre would have a rock life style. Also the type of people that would go to rock festivals like download. This video is non-diegetic because the sound plays over the video.

Emma Blackery- The Promise
Audience
The purpose of this music video is to entertain and to promote the artist. Also it gives so insight into what the song is about. Also it shows the audience how the artist performs and their style. Another purpose is the band trying to connect with the audience on an emotional level. Also help them through their own struggle and help them relies that things will get better.
Form
The form is a music video because the audio is anchored to the visuals- Andrew Goodwin (1992)
Content and Meaning
The first location is a house and it denotes a kitchen. The kitchen connotes verisimilitude. It helps the audience connect with the song because they can relate to an ordinary kitchen. Another location is a school. I know it is a school because it denotes lockers, tables and chairs. The school connotes that the girl in it is young enough to still be in education. One of the locations is a theatre stage. It denotes chairs and a safety curtain. This connotes a performance. Because of preferred reading the audience will low that the stage is where the artist performs.
One of the costumes is a school uniform. It denotes a shirt and tie. The costume connotes that she is in school. Another a costume is jeans and a top this has been chosen to create verisimilitude. The costume connotes normality, which makes it easier for the audience to connect to the song and understand it.
One of the major props is a guitar. The artist plays this. It connotes that she is a true artist and that it’s just her voice and guitar, which has connotations of simplicity. Another prop is a rucksack this is used to create verisimilitude because rucksacks have become a popular thing. So because of proffered reading people know it’s a normal thing to have a rucksack.
There is a gesture at the start where a man is shouting a points his finger up at the camera. This has connotations of aggression and violence. This is stereotypical of a man to show aggression. There is another gesture of the family members putting butter on toast. This is used to create verisimilitude again. The spreading of butter is a normal thing in everyday life. There is a gesture where the mother puts her hand on the main character and strokes her. This connotes that the mum is worried about her child and is concerted for her. The audience will know this because of preferred reading. The movement is shown to show love.
In the scene when the family were eating breakfast. The main character is in a brighter light and almost has a spot light on them. It connotes that she is the main character. Throughout the music video there is a light on her and it becomes brighter when the character get happier. This is connotes that she is getting happier. When the artist is performing at the start there is just one spotlight on her. This connotes that there is an enigma. Then when the song gets happier all the lights get brighter and the whole theatre gets brighter. Most of the scenes have artificial lighting.
The narrative is an enigma and a performance. The story is that is that a girl who is not wanting to live any more and doesn't see a way out. There is a performance of the girl singing.
There is a shot of the girl crying on her bed and the camera above her. This makes her look weak and helpless. There is a shallow depth of the mum’s hand. This connotes that her hand is important and significant.
There is a jump cut of the girl sat down in school. It shows different angels of her. These jump cuts enable the audience to see her surroundings. This is an effect that makes the performance black and white this connotes that there is an enigma. There is another jump cut of the artist singing. This is used because most videos that have a performance will have this. So it is preferred reading for the audience. The sound is non-diegetic because it is a music video.
Genre and Intended audience
The genre is an indie pop because the song has a deep meaning and is about teen problems.

The intended audience would've been 14-17 year olds because this is the age range that struggle with these kinds of problems. They would wear hipster style clothes and be part of the Internet generation.
